Kat is Kat van Rensellaer, a name that evokes the original Dutch colony on Manhattan Island and the families who accumulated wealth and power. This power continued to grow along with the conquest of the New World. Kat is from the merchant and trading classes who were the foot soldiers of empire and global capitalism. They are the means by which the resources of America, Africa and Asia were extracted, absorbed, turned into products and sold back to the growing middle classes. They are the handmaidens of the system, servants of the great hidden monarchy. In our story, Kat, dressed in gender ambiguous pantaloons that match the Monarch’s satin pattern, pink shirt and gold waistcoat, comes back from the “New World” with the treasure of the golden Lancelot statue and presents it to the Monarch.
