Lancelot is modeled on Lancelot “Capability” Brown, the English Master gardener who introduced the idea of broad, green lawns as the height of upper class English property owner fashion, absorbing and displacing formal English gardens and wild landscapes. The lawn was an infectious idea for the middle classes in America, Australia, and South Africa.
Our Lancelot is a symbol, but also a false, golden idol. The way that Lancelot meets his end in our story tells us that the dancers representing the system realize that he needs to be toppled in order to seize control of their destiny. We are the ones who can tell our own story, but only if we rediscover our true nature underneath the veneer of the lawn.
